I've never used GMail.  The lack of privacy (thanks in part to the presentation of ads based on your email content) really turned me off....  Nonetheless, I appreciate that a lot of people found the service to be useful.

 

Strangely enough, something has happened to GMail... at least in the eyes of my friends and cohorts... today. 

 

My friends and I have conversations over IM based solely on your name.  For example, instead the name Maurice you might see something like "I won't buy a Zune... or an iPod.  Who needs another device when you have a SmartPhone?" which was my name today.

 

Today, I noticed that 2 of my friends had declared their loss of love for GMail via their IM names.  One was "f**k gmail, it's so slow and unusable now" and the other was "thanks for all the spam gmail".

 

Then I just noticed that a prominent tech blogger, Tim Heuer, also lambasted the spam problem.

 

What happened?
