InfoPath - trials and tribulations
Posted on 7/9/2007 9:54 AM by Maurice Prather
For starters, if you haven't read Robert Bogue's open letter to the InfoPath team, do so.

I would have to agree with the premise behind his letter.  InfoPath is incredibly buggy and instead of making life easier, it makes doing anything outside a very simple scenario very hard.

My recommendation across the board is to avoid InfoPath.  Whenever someone starts with a conversation that starts with "we can use InfoPath to...", I immediately begin campaigning for a solution that excludes InfoPath.  Once the problems are highlighted against the possible benefits, it becomes evident that your time and resources are better spent elsewhere.

I've yet to work on a project that includes utilizing InfoPath.  I know that is a hard message to deliver, but I'd rather spend my time (and my client's) working toward something that is much more reliable and is generally easier to maintain in the long run.

re: InfoPath - trials and tribulations
Maurice,
without getting into a mud slinging match I find it hard to believe that you make such a opposing call to InfoPath as a technology especially when you admit that you have never worked on a project using the product?

Personally I've worked on a number of projects using InfoPath as both a Data Collection, Delivery and also Reporting tool. The reasons why InfoPath was used on each of these projects usually led back to the fact that it would be a quicker to develop the solution using InfoPath rather than creating either a 100% custom dev project or attempting to contort an existing product to do the clients bidding.

Now I'll admit there are some differences you need to take into account when developing InfoPath solutions for example, code is data driven not object driven, but simply boycotting a product based on the fact that you don't understand it seems a little silly.

One of the most useful resources I found was a book by Scott Roberts, and Hagen Green called "Desiging Forms for Microsoft Office InfoPath and Form services 2007"

Could I suggest that you read this first, actually use the product rather than making a call based on what you've heard from others.

Doesn't it seem that you're overlooking a useful product?

Since I've received email with the same thoughts as the comments posted here, I've written a general response... http://www.bluedoglimited.com/SharePointThoughts/ViewPost.aspx?ID=276.
