Living the 56k life...
Posted on 7/25/2004 11:38 AM by Maurice Prather
With the proliferance of broadband, it becomes easy to forget that a lot of folks still use modems.  I'm on a vacation of sorts now...  living with internet access via an "old fashioned" 56k connection.

Yes, the first hit to a SharePoint site is the worst but once that's done, life isn't that bad.  Granted I'm not perf expert, but my general impression is that as long as the back end is speedy, the general experience is relatively good.

I'll be rather quiet for the next couple of weeks... like I said, I'm on a vacation of sorts (visting the parentals == time away from work but not a "real" vacation).  Chances are I won't post or attend to emails consistently until I return to Seattle.  Of course, if the parents drive me nuts sooner than later, you might find me online more.  :)

Enjoying life in the slow lane...

re: Living the 56k life...
I know what you mean about the first hit on a sharepoint site, it's a killer, sometimes even over a lan.

I did a measure, the first page load is 700-800k, depending on your home page. 500k of that is javascript.

Have you enabled http compression for .js and .css on your server? Makes quite a difference...

Thanks for the suggestion...  I went ahead and enabled HTTP compression.  I've even posted the details on how to do so.  :)
