Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
Posted on 10/6/2004 4:29 PM by Maurice Prather
Here's a fun experiment... :)

If you're using the Syndication Generator on your site, feel free to leave a comment with either your name or feed url.  Maybe you'll find a new site worth visiting... or new subscribers.

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
I've tried the rest and stayed with this one.

I've been playing with this fine web part for a while, as I work to get my fledling web site up and running. It's fantastic, and makes setting up an RSS newsfeed brain-dead easy. Thanks to Maurice for his tremendous generousity in creating this part for the WSS and SPS community. I don't know that I'll try to create a full-blown blog, but this part (and Maurice's helpful notes) give me the opportunity.

Hi,
I'm using Syndication generator to display all Announcements List of the sub-sites in a Rssfead reader Webpart in The Welcome page of my "Parent" Site.
Its very great, because I can filter on the "Expires" date.
Very good job Maurice.

The Syndication Generator has been installed on a system with more than 600 sites and 1700 users.  It's been well received by our customers.

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
Quick Question regarding security? I have setup your great web-part on our site, love it...except that I can't seem to get it to work for anonymouse users. I have the site level configuration set to allow anonymouse access to lists and documents. The web-site itself is set for anonymous access.

I then created a new list, and changed the privs of the list to allow anonymous access for adding, editing, viewing. Then on my front page (which is restricted), I setup the rSS link and pointed it to this new list.

If I open a new browser and just cut & paste the link into it, I get an access denied error from syndication generator. How can I set the RSS feed up in a place that allows anonymous RSS readers to get the data?

Looks like a great web-part, but this limitation is big. Even if I wanted to just allow restricted access, most RSS readers don't support cookie or authentication mechanisms...I even tried this with my rss reader "FeedReader".

Any help is appreciated.

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
The answer is simple - the page that contains the SG web part must also have anonymous access.  Otherwise, your users will be prompted for authentication.  If you're main page is locked down, you'll need to create a page (with the part) in document library that allows anonymous users.

Summary: Both the page containing the SG web part and the syndicated list should have the same access levels.

Simon,

I misunderstood your question the first time around... the problem you're describing is known and is documented at http://www.bluedoglimited.com/Downloads/Lists/General%20Discussion/DispForm.aspx?ID=17.

Let's track all further discussions there... :)

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
Maurice,
Thanks very much for this!  Very well written, terrific part!!

We have one small bug ... if I map a title to a calculated field, the field *type* is in the emitted XML a part of the title (rather stange!).  For example, create a field called "RSS Title" of type Calculated, and set it to (say)
  [Title] & "-"  & Year(Begin)
In the generator, map the title to the new field, and the generated XML includes:
  <title>string;#An Event-2005</title>
(Note the inclusion of "string;#").
Any thoughts?  Of course, the ability to show a date other than created or modified would be great for this application!
thx again!
cheers,
Bill

Bill and Simon:
Please download v2.0.0.7 which was release just this evening.  If you continue to experience problems, let me know.

Bill:
How would you propose specifying alternate dates?

Everyone:
If you have a specific problem, feel free to create a thread in the General Discussion board (http://www.bluedoglimited.com/Downloads/Lists/General%20Discussion).

Thanks,

I am a first-user of the Syndication Generator; and I have to say - It ROCKS!
I expected it to be much harder - possibly having to build my own, but thank you Maurice (thanx a million times), for providing this Excellent webpart and making my promise to provide rss feeds for the site I'm building true.

Cool Web Part. What about Portal Listings though?
I just ran across this web part today. Very nice.
Is there a way I can syndicate specific portal listings (i.e. News) for specific portal audiences? I'm looking for a way to suck news items from my portal to our web application using a syndicated feed.

Thanks!

Portal and MySite support is not currently available (2.0.0.11).  This has been slated for the next release, though.  :)

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
Maurice,

I just wanted thank you for your great tool.  It has made a weekly task of posting a podcast no work at all.  I teamed your product with isapi_rewrite, to redirect the podcast to a free caching site, and it all works great.  I've been running it over six months now, and no hiccups.

Thank you again,

Lighting up the RSS Toolbar Icon in IE7
Is there any way for a page containing this web part to cause the IE7 RSS Feed Icon to light up?

Many thanks!
Anonymous User @ 2/15/2007 7:49 AM
re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
At this time, the SGWP does not inject the necessary markup to light up a browser.

Syndication Generator in an intranet?
Our intranet site is Sharepoint 2003+WSS 2.0. It runs in https throughout the whole site - anonymous users are disabled.
Is it possible to use Syndication Generator to publish internally from one WSS site to another?
I have set up Syndication Generator in one site - it creates an RSS. IE7 can show this feed, but when I try to read it in a feedreader (ie. SmilingGoat), i get this error - even if I put the reader on the same page as the generator:

<my url> Channel=RSS does not appear to be a valid RSS feed. If the feed is valid, please ensure your proxy server settings are correct if you use a proxy server.
Error returned from FeedReader: The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized.:SmilingGoat.Syndication

re: Let the world know that you're using the Syndication Generator!
Arnfinn,

You are bumping into a problem with delegation and what is known as the "double hop".  The only way to have the site pass on user credentials will be to enable Kerberos authentication (which is no small task).
