The main site (what you are reading now) is primarily used to house my personal blog (rss) and photos.  It's a small window into the life of a Seattlelite... :)

Finally, after nearly 2 years of waiting... I finally had a chance to upgrade my firewall.

The old machine was pretty slow by today's standards - PIII-500 with only 20 Gb of space and 512 Mb of RAM.

New firewall is much newer... probably a solid 8-10 years newer... :)

The next trick will to be migrate all my rules over to the new TMG server.

It's hard to believe we (the public) waited so many years for x64 version of TMG/ISA to arrive.  The sad part is that I found one glaring typo and wrong SharePoint path references.  Three years and some little bugs weren't cleaned up.  Oh well, at least I'm able to retire the old firewall server...

Alabama is now firmly seated as the National Champs.  Roll Tide!!  Congrats to Bama and Texas for playing a great game.

I've been watching and reading as many clips and news stories as I could possible get my hands on via that little thing called the internet.  Living up here in the Pacific Northwest in Pac-10 country, football news is kinda of hard to come by... football is not nearly front and center as it is in the South.  Nonetheless, I've been trying my best all these years to follow the Tide.

The Tide has gone through a championship drought.  We had faced dark times brought on by stupid coaching decisions that led to probation, bad hiring decisions (remember Price?), etc, etc.

I was a senior in undergrad when Alabama played Miami in New Orleans.  I clearly remember being the underdog.  Miami was going to be too hot for Bama.  Their passing attack was unstoppable.  Bama was too slow.  Well, Bama crushed Miami - we stacked 11 on the defensive line taunting Gino to throw, we ran down their fastest guys, we pressed the QB the entire evening... George Teague's famous rundown, strip, and return is forever etched in my mind.  Definitely memorable times...

Hard to believe it took 17 years before Bama would return to the pinnacle of college football.

What a fun year 2009 has been.  We watched the Tide grow stronger, more confident, more refined.  We watched the defense become a mauling machine that seriously changed many games...

First, a review of the Championship Game...

The game was fun and frustrating.

Fun because Alabama won.  Fun because there were a few key plays that really changed the dynamics of the game.  Fun because Alabama proved to be the better team.

Frustrating because Alabama made some crucial mistakes at the start and they played too conservatively in the third quarter.

For example, the fake punt would have been absolutely amazing... if the throw was deep enough.  It wasn't.  It set up Texas for their first score.  Saving grace: the defense.

Confusion on the ensuing kick-off was the next gaffe.  It was clear to me that the team has a little unfocused.  Perhaps the noise, the long layoff since the SEC championship game, something was not letting the team settle in.

The fog had to lift.

And it did.  The second quarter the team focused and started to wear down Texas.  The first half ended in spectacular fashion.

Perhaps too much so... they let off the gas in the 3rd quarter.  Maybe it was an attempt to just run down the clock ... maybe it was an attempt to not completely run up the score ... maybe they already felt they had won the game... I'm not sure.  Either way, the play in the 3rd quarter was uncharacteristic of the Tide.  They slowed down enough to give Texas a chance to get back into the game.  Texas persevered; they capitalized on the Bama's change of pace.

In the end, we reclaimed the 2 touchdowns that Texas garned in the 3rd and 4th quarters.  The hits were really good, the defensive coverage was good, and the running game was steady.

It would have been nice to see Alabama play as the absolutely precise machine as we saw in the game against Florida.  It would have been nice to see Greg throw more, to see Julio and Marquis in action. Nonetheless, it was a good game.  Hats off to Texas for not crying about the injury and pulling together as a team to make the game interesting.

The most memorable games of the year include...
  • Florida: Hands down the best game of the year was the Florida game.  Texas was interesting; The Florida game was personal.  No one forgot the fourth quarter of 2008 SEC Championship game. Everyone played in their top form.  The team was solidly focused and a well-oiled machine went to work.
  • Auburn: If you're from the state of Alabama, you know what I'm talking about.  On a bad year, heck any year, your goal is beat the Other team. Aside from the standard rivalry, the game was great because Alabama's offense finally came together.  The last drive was a sign of the what was to come in the Florida game.
  • Tennessee: What more can you say about Mount Cody and his two blocked field goals?  Talk about edge of heartache and agony... all the way over to pure elation.
  • Virginia Tech: First question of the game - who is the kid replacing John Parker Wilson?  Holy smokes!  Alabama has an air attack! VT was the first of many tests ... what a great way to start the season.
Roll Tide!  Congratulation on a 14-0 season, Bama!

There may not be many Bama fans up here in the PNW, but I know the fan base is growing!  Ksenia wears Crimson nowadays!  Asta wags her tail more.  Neah Bay ... well she just meows and eats more.

Roll Tide Roll!!

Last year, I watched with pride as my alma mater took control of the SEC Championship game... then lost it in the fourth.  It was crushing... and worse yet, the damned TV signal kept fading in and out that day.

The nice thing about digital TV over the air is that free but as many folks know by now, it's tempermental.  That fateful day last December was just one of those days where our little digital antennae could not pull in the signal very effectively.  It was a painful, if not terribly embarassing, day watching my team not only lose to the Gators... but we had to watch it in blocks... literally.

Anyways, fast forward one year.

The Crimson Tide are stronger, more disciplined, and more talented across all positions.

This year, I had the pleasure of watching McElroy, Ingram, Peek, Jones, Maze, Johnson, Richardson, Arenas, Barron, Tiffin, Cody, Reamer, McClain and the rest of the Bama squad not only come out swinging... but dominate the entire game.

It was a thing of beauty.  Four quarters of great football.  My favorite was the 3rd quarter drive that went into the 4th.  Calm, deliberate, and extremely well executed.

Great game.

Oh... this time we watched the game on even larger TV... and one with a solid satellite connection at a friend's house.  None of that "hey, James!! don't move or the signal bonks out!" from last year.

The Alabama-LSU game was great matchup.  Interestingly enough, those two teams were the only top 10 teams to play ranked opponents this weekend...

The game was fun to watch... nowhere near the nail biting experience of 2 weeks ago with Tennessee.

I thought the offensive responded to the many recent criticisms.  Is there room to improve?  Sure.  But if you look at the passing stats, the ball was thrown to several different players.  This was key to our success, if you ask me.  Unlike previous games where Greg had centered his focus on Julio, it was clear the scope of the field was starting to open back up.

Great game.  Roll Tide!

Looking forward to next week at Mississippi State.

Has it been more than a year since I've posted something on my personal blog?

Yes.

As with many other things, blogging is something that is fashionable one day and the next day it's something that you barely have time to give.

One year... what's happened?

We flew to Unalaska for a week's worth of exploring.  Best vacation in a long time.  The scenery was amazing.  Lot's of WWII history, lots of fishing lore, and more eagles than you'd ever imagine.

We came home and week later flew out to Hawaii.  Nice place but the water was definitely colder than I had anticipated.

Fall came and went... it was one of the most beautiful falls I've ever seen here in Seattle.

Flew to see the family in Dothan for Turkey Day.

Flew to see the family in Ohio for xmas.

Loved the weird snow storm that sacked Seattle.  Sledded down the hill we live one.  Nothing like having your own person ski run.

Finally adopted a cute little cat after searching for nearly a year.  Her name is Neah Bay.

Went to the MCM course.  Best course since college.

Went to London for a conference.  Traveled to Bristol, met some incredibly generous people.  Went to Scotland and visited the Caledonian channel (this is an objective for the sail around the world trip in the coming years).

Celebrated 2 years of Ksenia's relocation to the Emerald city.

Thought about posting a "one year of no posts" post.

Rented a chainsaw to take out some overgrown hedges.

And... continued chasing racoons out of the yard.

All in all ... busy ... fun... aggrevating (racoons are eating all the fish in our pond)...

Next post: < 1 year.  :)

We're going out the Aleutian Islands... to a faraway place where birds live, the winds blow hard, and you can't there by car.

Unalaska or bust!  Where is Unalaska?  Click on the link below...

I'm super excited and somewhat unprepared - I haven't even started packing.  We leave tomorrow at 5:30ish.  :)

On my vista machine, I find the IE security dialog that prompts the user to Allow a program to run very helpful.  I typically don't allow anything to run unchecked.

A few months ago, I was quickly trying to get something done and accidentally selected the "Don't show me the warning for this application again" option.

I clicked ok and everything ran fine.  However, I wanted to uncheck that option (so that I would always be prompted).  I couldn't find a way to reset the security dialog setting.

After searching around for a bit, I found the location in the registry where the setting is saved.  The following was taken from a registry export for the app that I wanted reset...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy\{B1DB9C6D-CCD2-405E-89BE-F3580307E120}]
"AppPath"="C:\\Program Files\\SomeApplication"
"AppName"="SomeProgram.exe"
"Policy"=dword:00000003

Remove the key representing the application ("{B1DB9...") and ... tada... you'll be prompted the next time around.  :)
